Chief Investigator – Professor Paula McDonald

Paula McDonald’s research addresses work in its social context, in particular, gendered forms of workplace discrimination and harassment, work-life boundaries, and young people’s early work experiences. Paula published 2 co-authored books in 2011: Women and representation in local government: International case studies (Routledge; with Barbara Pini) and Young people and work (Ashgate; with Robin Price, Janis Bailey and Barbara Pini).

She has 2 further books forthcoming in 2012: Men, wage work and family (Routledge; with Emma Jeanes) and Gender, ageing and work (Palgrave; with Barbara Pini). Paula’s research on discrimination and harassment has involved close partnerships with the three Australian Working Women’s Centres and the Australian Human Rights Commission who have provided generous access to valuable grass-roots data on a range of gendered workplace issues. Journal articles include those in Work, Employment & Society, Industrial Relations Journal, British Journal of Management and International Journal of Management Reviews.

Chief Investigator – Associate Professor Sara Charlesworth

Principal Research Fellow
Centre for Work + Life, University of South Australia

Sara Charlesworth has a background in social work, political science, government law and legal studies. Her central and long-standing research interest is gender equality in paid work and, in particular, the impact of employment and anti-discrimination regulation at the labour market, industry and workplace levels. Her research has focused on job quality, part-time work, work/life balance, sex and pregnancy discrimination and sexual harassment. She has published and presented widely in a range of academic, policy and community forums and has been actively involved in a number of key gender policy reviews and debates. She is currently working on a five year Australian Research Council project entitled: From Margins to Mainstream, Gender Equality and Employment Regulation, which explores the potential of the International Labour Organisation’s decent work agenda in mainstreaming gender equality as a central industrial relations concern. In 2012, Sara has been one of four panel members of the ACTU Independent Inquiry into Insecure Work.

Research Assistant – Tina Graham

Business School, Queensland University of Technology

Tina Graham is a senior research officer in the Business School at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. Tina has worked closely with Paula on the Sexual Harassment in Australia project for the past 2 years and was formerly the research officer for an ARC Linkage grant on young people’s employment. Tina has published articles in the journals Youth Studies Australia and Psychology of Women Quarterly and is the co-author of the report Formal Complaints of Sexual Harassment lodged with Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commissions 1 July 2009 – 31 December 2009. Prior to working at QUT, Tina had an industry background in web development and IT systems coordination.

Research Assistant – Anthea Worley

Centre for Work + Life, University of South Australia

Anthea Worley joined the Centre for Work + Life in August 2011 to work as a Research Assistant on the ARC Discovery Project, Sexual Harassment in Australia. Anthea works closely with Sara and assists in the development of project reports and articles. Anthea has previously worked as a Research Assistant for the International Centre for Allied Health Evidence (UniSA) and was involved in systematic reviews and developing guidelines across a range of allied health related fields. Anthea is currently studying for her Master of Social Work.
